Inverted Region Electron Transfer Demonstrated by Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence at the Liquid/Liquid Interface

چکیده
We describe several transinterface electron-transfer processes occurring at the benzonitrile (PhCN)/water interface that produce excited states. When an electrode was moved very close to the interface or even through the interface to produce an electrode/thin layer organic phase/aqueous solution configuration, the electrogenerated radical species formed in the PhCN phase (C12-Ru(bpy)3, DPA+, or TH+) diffused to the liquid/ liquid interface to react with (oxidize) a coreactant (C2O4) soluble only in the aqueous solution, leading to the formation of a strongly reducing radical species (CO2). The electron transfer from CO2 in the aqueous solution to the oxidized species in the organic phase across the liquid/liquid interface produced an electronically excited state which then emitted light. The appearance of an ECL signal in these systems supports the suggestion of Marcus inverted region behavior in very exothermic heterogeneous electron-transfer reactions at the liquid/ liquid interface.

Lipophilicity of ions electrogenerated at a Pt coated micropipette supported liquid–liquid interface
A novel method to readily determine the lipophilicity of electrogenerated charged species is reported. This is achieved by local electrolysis at a Pt coated micropipette and, subsequently, driving the electrogenerated species to transfer across the liquid–liquid interface supported at the tip of the micropipette under potential control. The formal potential of ion transfer can then be used to g...
متن کاملStudies of charge transfer at liquid liquid interfaces and bilayer lipid membranes by scanning electrochemical microscopy
The principles of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and its application to studies of electron transfer at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions are reviewed. The results of SECM measurements with a number of redox couples at the bare liquid liquid interface or an interface with a lipid monolayer suggest that the electron transfer follows that predicted by Marcus t...

متن کاملLong-Range Electron Transfer through a Lipid Monolayer at the Liquid/Liquid Interface
The electron transfer (ET) rate at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions was probed as a function of the driving force and distance between redox centers by scanning electrochemical microscopy. The adsorption of phospholipids at the interface resulted in a decrease in the rate of interfacial ET between aqueous redox species and the oxidized form of zinc porphyrin in benzene...
